SLR has been awarded a Silver Engineering Excellence Award for the Quinapoxet Dam removal and river habitat restoration project from the American Council of Engineering Companies of Massachusetts (ACEC-MA).
About the Dam Removal
SLR was retained by the Massachusetts Division of Ecological Restoration (MA DER) to conduct an initial feasibility study and provide hydraulic modeling for the removal of the Quinapoxet Dam in West Boylston, Massachusetts.
The project focused on removing a dam built in 1905 as part of the infrastructure supporting the Wachusett Reservoir. Over time, the dam became obsolete, prompting the client to pursue its removal and restore the Quinapoxet River’s natural flow.
Dam removal required careful engineering, environmental, and regulatory planning to manage river flow, sediment, construction sequencing, habitat restoration, fish passage, permitting, and archeological survey.
